The people of Winneba deeply revere their main deity, Penkye Otu, for guiding their ancestors from Timbuktu to their present home. Along the journey, they relied on the deity for protection from hardship, disease, and hunger. After settling, annual rituals were led by the elders of the Otuano Royal House. Early practices included human sacrifice, but over time, community concerns led to seeking a more humane alternative.
